History

Like so many businesses dating back to the 19th Century, the funeral home has a long and storied history. Established in 1862, the home was an adjunct business of the S.B. Horton Furniture Company. This was, at the time, a common occurrence as furniture companies had the means to create and upholster burial coffins, so furniture companies would take advantage of this capability and often became hybridized businesses.

In the early 1940’s, the funeral home moved to its current location as a dedicated funeral home and was known as the Horton Funeral Home. As state laws for incorporation changed, it soon became officially known as the S.B. Horton Funeral Home Co., Inc., and was operated by brothers David and Stewart Horton.

Beginning in the mid-1970’s, the funeral home changed ownership a number of times until finally, in 2002, the home was purchased by its current owner, Douglas R. Mathie, who had a deep appreciation for the home’s rich heritage and was permitted to rename the facility as The Horton-Mathie Funeral Home.

In 2003 the facility was completely and meticulously renovated, retaining its quiet residential feel while taking advantage of the newest industry technologies for the comfort and convenience of its clientele.
