William W Schreiber was born on August 19, 1926, in Norman, Oklahoma, to William and Lucille (Weisenbach) Schriever. He died on March 1, 2019 at the age of 92, at his home in Peconic Landing.
Bill attended the University of Oklahoma where, in 1944 at the age of 17, he was accepted into the Navy V-12 program. In 1946, he received his commission as a Navy ensign through the NROTC program. Graduating in 1947 with a B.S. degree in Engineering Physics, Bill commenced graduate work in Physics at University of Illinois, where he met his future wife Barbara Dwight. He continued in the PhD program at Harvard University. On October 10, 1953, he and Barbara were married and established a home in Chestnut MA.
Barbara Schreiber had been a "summer Kid" in Orient all her life, and the Schrievers relocated to Orient in 1957. He became an active member of the Democratic Party in Southold Town; served in the Boy Scouts as a local leader, and in the scouting organization of Suffolk County; and was active in the Orient Fire Department. Bill and his wife Barbara were organizing members, board members and volunteers at the Community Action Southold Town (CAST).
Predeceased by his wife of 53 years in 2006, Bill and Barbara had no children. He was also predeceased by his sister Elinor Scott, and has no close relatives.
A church service will be held on Friday, March 8, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at Orient Congregational church, followed by interment at Orient Central Cemetery.
